GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – A company that provides transportation to people with special needs had to halt operations Monday morning after their fleet was targeted by destructive thieves.
The catalytic converters were stolen from an entire fleet of PCS (Person Centered Services) Transportation/Active Day’s vehicles at some point over the weekend, according to Trumbull Director Sherry Christner.
The company is located in the 500 block of Rush Blvd., which is where the large vans and buses were parked.
Christner noticed the problem around 6 a.m. Monday when she went out to start one of the vehicles.
On the lot, there were cables dangling from underneath the buses PCS provides and coordinates rides for people with disabilities and serve about 100 people per day at the Girard locations.
She told police this is not the first time catalytic converters have been stolen from them.
“This is the second time that this has happened to us. First time was back in Thanksgiving time when we were off for break. We came back and they had hit us,” Christner said.
The company is working to set up a transportation solution moving forward for the rest of the week.
PCS/Active Day provides and coordinates integrated vocational, recreational, leisure, social, volunteer and educational activities for individuals with disabilities to enhance career opportunities.
YP – The Real Yellow PagesSM – helps you find the right local businesses to meet your specific needs. Search results are sorted by a combination of factors to give you a set of choices in response to your search criteria. These factors are similar to those you might use to determine which business to select from a local Yellow Pages directory, including proximity to where you are searching, expertise in the specific services or products you need, and comprehensive business information to help evaluate a business’s suitability for you. “Preferred” listings, or those with featured website buttons, indicate YP advertisers who directly provide information about their businesses to help consumers make more informed buying decisions. YP advertisers receive higher placement in the default ordering of search results and may appear in sponsored listings on the top, side, or bottom of the search results page.
In the video, engineers at Tesla Engineering show off prototypes and a schematic laying out the proposed ventilator design as they explain how they are re-purposing various auto parts for the much needed medical devices.
“We want to use parts we know really well, we know the reliability of and we can go really fast and they’re available in volume,” Tesla Engineering Director Joseph Mardall said in the four-minute video, which has racked up more than 1.5 million views in less than 24 hours. Mardall stood in front of a diagram that indicated that many of the parts in the ventilator’s design are used in Tesla vehicles.
A prototype ventilator laid out on a table in the lab included a “mixing chamber” that, according to a Tesla engineer, was a part used in Tesla(TSLA) cars.
Another more complete prototype shown later in the video used a touchscreen display from a Model 3, as well as vehicle control machinery from a Model 3, according to other Tesla employees in the video.
Instead of the usual Model 3 displays, the ventilator screen showed plot lines for what would be a patient’s lung activity based on the pressure, flow and volume of air moving in and out of the pump.
The prototype ventilator includes a backup battery and self-contained air supply that could allow it to work when not plugged into hospital power and oxygen supplies. Those should provide 20 to 40 minutes during which a patient can be moved from one place to another in a hospital, according to the video.
Tesla employees in the video did not indicate when the ventilator they’re working on might be ready for mass production. The company also did not immediately respond to requests for more details on the project.
Tesla engineers have spoken with engineers from ventilator maker Medtronic, according to both companies, but it was not clear how much, if any, involvement Medtronic may have had with the ventilator project featured in the video.
Separately, SpaceX, the commercial space company also led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, is making a critical part for Medtronic ventilators, according to Medtronic.
Musk has previously downplayed the seriousness of the the Covid-19 pandemic. On March 6th, he tweeted “The coronavirus panic is dumb” to his more than 30 million followers.
Other automakers, including General Motors and Ford, have started working on ventilators using designs from medical technology companies
The mopeds are proper motor-bikes, designed by engineers for a broad spectrum of customers. And lets face it, our MB’s are just mopeds. Our wheels are bigger, but they’re mopeds just the same.
But the reality is, there is not much for us to use. The best part about a moped is the brakes. They use proper drums, with big axles, good stuff for sure!
Sadly, the offset is all wrong for the China motors which is a major bummer because that is what most of us run. The rear hub has both a drive side and bicycle side sproket but they’re too wide and chains just don’t align. The other bummer is that the China motors require a clutch lever So if you have front brake, you end up with three levers if you run the moped rear hub.
The front hubs are good stuff too, but again, they have big axles, so if you want to run them, you need to open up the dropouts as the axles are bigger than bicycle stuff.
Their motors are just plain funky, they don’t fit in bicycles. They use good levers/controls, but there are so many choices for levers/controls that you really don’t need to steal from the moped scene. Beyond that, everything is different, so there is nothing left.
Now if you run a Morini motor, it’s a whole new world. The chain offsets are just right, and since the Morini has a centrifugal clutch, you only need two levers. A perfect match. But not many folks are running Morini motors.
So sadly, the mopeds are in a class of their own. Of course, I have a rockin’ set of big axle moped hubs in my Morini bike, but my China motored bike runs bicycle hubs, laced into Worksman wheels. Each the optimal setup for the motor used.
