The Car Market ‘Is Insane’: Dealers Can’t Keep Up With Demand

Some customers have balked at paying top dollar for new cars and have opted to make do with older vehicles. That has increased demand for parts and service, one of the most profitable businesses for car dealers. Many dealers have extended repair-shop hours. Mr. Ricart said he had some repair technicians putting in 10- or 12-hour days three or four days in a row before taking a few days off.

Of course, the shortage of cars will end, but it isn’t clear when.

As Covid-19 cases and deaths rose last spring, automakers shut down plants across North America from late March until mid-May. Since their plants were down and they expected sales to come back slowly, they ordered fewer semiconductors, the tiny brains that control engines, transmissions, touch screens and many other components of modern cars and trucks.

At the same time, consumers confined to their homes began buying laptops, smartphones and game consoles, which increased demand for chips from companies that make those devices. When automakers restarted their plants, there were fewer chips available.

Many automakers have had to idle plants for a week or two at a time in the first half of 2021. G.M., Ford Motor and others have also resorted to producing vehicles without certain components and holding them at plants until the required parts arrive. At one point, G.M. had about 20,000 nearly complete vehicles awaiting electronic components. It began shipping them in June.

Ford has been hit harder than many other automakers because of a fire at one of its suppliers’ factories in Japan. At the end of June, Ford had about 162,000 vehicles at dealer lots, fewer than half the number it had just three months ago and roughly a quarter of the stocks its dealers typically hold.

This month, Ford is slowing production at several North American plants because of the chip shortage. The company said it planned to focus on completing vehicles.

Mr. Ricart recently took a trip on his Harley-Davidson to Louisville, Ky., and got a look at the trucks and S.U.V.s at a Ford plant that are waiting to be finished. He said he saw “thousands of trucks in fields with temporary fencing around them.”

Manufacturers can’t keep up with the exploding bicycle demand

If you’re looking to buy a bicycle this summer, you may be out of luck.

A cycling boom sparked last year during the coronavirus pandemic has continued into 2021, creating short supply across the nation. Manufacturers are struggling to supply bikes to an exploding customer base of people newly eager to enjoy the outdoors.

The shortage is leaving business owners with little or nothing in stock — and customers with few options.

Jason Dohrmann, who owns Summit Ski & Cycle in Los Angeles, said he has never seen a bike shortage like this before. Dohrmann told CBS News correspondent Nichelle Medina that his store ran out of bikes last year.

“We’re definitely not making that much money, but we’re just making enough to survive right now,” Dohrmann said.

Dohrmann said he thinks he won’t have bikes to sell until next year. Until then, he is switching gears and focusing on bike repairs when he can get parts.

“Bikes would have to sit here for an extra couple of weeks just waiting on a part when usually we get it done in one day,” he said.

Dohrmann’s problem is similar across the U.S. During the pandemic, bicycle makers said they slowed down production because people were forced to stay indoors. But once COVID-19 restrictions started to lift, demand for bikes skyrocketed and manufacturers have yet to catch up, one analyst said.

Bicycle sales grew 55% between December 2020 and February 2021 when compared to that same period in 2019, said Matt Powell, senior industry advisor and vice president at market research firm NPD Group. Bike sales are part of a larger trend of Americans buying more outdoor equipment this summer, Powell told CBS News.

“We’re seeing camp furniture, grills, coolers, hammocks, recreational tents, all very strong,” he said. “And then, of course, the cycling business has been outstanding.”

Ford’s first-quarter China vehicle sales down 35% as coronavirus hits demand

FILE PHOTO: The Chinese national flag flies on the roof of a Ford car dealership in Beijing, China October 11, 2018. REUTERS/Thomas Peter

BEIJING (Reuters) – Ford Motor Co (F.N) said on Thursday that its China vehicle sales in the first three months this year fell 34.9% from a year earlier to 88,770 units, as the novel coronavirus epidemic hit demand in the world’s biggest auto market.

The Dearborn, Michigan-based company said, however, all its dealers in China had resumed work and its sales in March had returned to 75% of the same period last year.

In China, Ford makes cars through Jiangling Motors Corp Ltd (JMC) (000550.SZ), in which it has a stake, and a joint venture with Chongqing Changan Automobile Co Ltd (000625.SZ).

Ford has been trying to revive sales in China after its business began slumping in late 2017. Sales sank 26% in 2019, after a 37% drop in 2018. In 2017, its China sales fell 6% from a year earlier.

China’s auto sales dropped 8% in 2019 and are expected to fall more than 5% this year. Overall auto sales slumped 42.4% in the first quarter.

Sales of Ford’s larger U.S. rival, General Motors Co (GM.N), dropped 43.3% in China in the first quarter.

Car Carrier Wallenius Wilhelmsen Drops 14 Ships on Tumbling Automotive Demand

International car carrier

Wallenius Wilhelmsen

will cut its fleet by 14 vessels as automobile production and demand nosedive around the world amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Oslo-based shipowner, one of the world’s biggest car movers with a fleet of 125 ships, said it would scrap four vessels and idle another 10 as auto manufacturers halt production at plants and many countries lock down economic activity. The company said it will also suspend dividend payments this year and next to preserve cash.

“The world has changed dramatically over the past weeks, and we are all feeling the effect,” said President and Chief Executive Craig Jasienski. “The impact these events will have on the world economy and global supply chains remains unpredictable, but it is increasingly clear that current events will have longer term impacts.”

The company, which employs more than 9,000 people in 30 countries, is also a major logistics provider for vehicle makers, operating 120 processing centers and a dozen marine terminals that handle the flow of thousands of cars, trucks and heavy machinery across the world.

Car movers were expecting a flat year before the virus hit, following the impact of the U.S.-China trade dispute and a weaker economic outlook.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen said it would save $60 million from halting two annual dividend payments.

“We are taking early precautionary steps now, to preserve cash,” Mr. Jasienski said.

Auto makers have suspended production at factories in North America and Europe in the past week, following actions in China to shutter assembly plants there earlier in an outbreak that has now gone global.

Detroit car companies said last week they would halt factory operations until at least March 30 to clean facilities and develop other preventive measures to limit the virus’s spread.

Honda Motor Co.

and

Toyota Motor Corp.

also said they would temporarily halt production in North America.

The plant closures are cascading down automotive supply chains, including parts makers and transport providers, already under strain this year from reduced consumer demand for automobiles.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen shares were off 9.9% Monday, trading at 7.75 Norwegian kroner (69 cents) on the Oslo Stock Exchange.
