How To Get a Vehicle History Report

A vehicle history report (or VIN check) is an invaluable tool if you are planning on buying or selling a vehicle. As a buyer, you can use a vehicle history report to give you peace of mind that the vehicle you are thinking of purchasing is in good condition. On the other hand, if you are selling a vehicle then a clean history report can help entice potential buyers.

How to Obtain a Vehicle History Report

You can obtain both free and paid VIN lookups. Free vehicle records will typically include less information than paid ones, but they may be sufficient depending on what information you need. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) offers a free VinCheck. As with a complete vehicle history report, you will need to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) when using VinCheck. You can also only make up to five searches within a 24-hour period and certain vehicle records may take up to six months to be updated with VinCheck.

Alternatively, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers a more limited history report. The NHTSA’s search tool is useful mainly if you want to see if your vehicle or any of its parts have been recalled.

Third-party databases, including SearchQuarry.com, also offer both free and paid VIN lookups. The paid records offered through third-party companies tend to be the most complete. The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System provides a list of approved providers of vehicle information and history data. Note that some approved providers will only provide records to car dealers and not directly to consumers.

What is Included in a Vehicle History Report

Not all vehicle history reports will include the same information, but in general you can expect your VIN report to include some or all of the following:

  • Accident history
  • Previous owners
  • Liens held against the vehicle
  • Recalls
  • Flood damage
  • Title checks
  • History of airbag deployments
  • Maintenance record
  • Problems with the odometer
  • Records of theft

Note that not all VIN checks will include the same type of information. A record from the NICB, for example, is designed to prevent the exchange of stolen vehicles, so it’s great if you want to make sure that the car in question wasn’t reported stolen. On the other hand, it won’t include much information about that vehicle’s maintenance history.

Vehicle Records from the DMV

Most DMV’s don’t provide vehicle history records. However, many do provide vehicle registration and title abstracts, which contain much of the same information that you would find in a history report. In New York, for example, the registration abstract includes some useful history information, such as parking fines and insurance lapses. A title record abstract, meanwhile, will include information about previous owners of the vehicle.

Got Bored Kids at Home? Check out the Petersen Automotive Museum’s Free Streams and Activities

In Los Angeles, the Petersen Automotive Museum is a go-to destination for us staffers at Automobile, and there isn’t one of us who hasn’t wiled away an afternoon there immersed in all it has to offer. While the museum is understandably closed until at least the end of March, it hasn’t taken long for it to begin a schedule of live streaming events and other educational activities from its avant garde headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, all offered for free on its website.

If you have bored kids at home, you’re in luck. The events are mostly geared toward children, though no doubt parents will enjoy following along as well. So far, the schedule is as follows (all times are PST):

  • Tuesday, March 17, 10 a.m. – Force and Motion
    • Cars are about motion. While it may seem simple to press a pedal and move forward, there are dozens of forces interacting that must be balanced to produce motion. From Newton’s laws to different types of energy, students will learn the simple physics behind the automobile.
  • Tuesday, March 17, 1 p.m. – Balloon Cars
    • For a car to move, a force must be applied. Students will explore propulsion and Newton’s Third Law of Motion by making their own balloon cars.
  • Wednesday, March 18, 10 a.m. – History of the Car
    • Cars have been in existence for more than a century (or longer, depending on when you start counting). Join the Petersen as it explores the evolution of the automobile.
  • Wednesday, March 18, 1 p.m. – License Plates
    • License plates identify vehicles as properly registered with the state, but may also serve as a canvas. Students will create their own license plates and decorate them to show off something about their home state.
  • Thursday, March 19, 10 a.m. – Storytime Featuring “Go, Dog, Go!” By P.D. Eastman
    • Students will read the beloved tale about dogs and their cars.
  • Thursday, March 19, 1 p.m. – Animal Cars 
    • Students will make a car of their favorite animal with materials found around the house.
  • Friday, March 20, 10 a.m. – Design Process
    • Utilizing the car, students will explore how things go from idea to finished product.
  • Friday, March 20, 1 p.m. – Car Models
    • A critical part of automotive design is creating a model. Students will create car models to show how the modeling process can help to explore design choices.
    • Future lessons will cover propulsion, aerodynamics, racing and a host of other topics.

Are Expensive Bicycle Wheels Worth the Money? Let’s Check the Physics

In this video, you see a cyclist testing new aerodynamic wheels from Zipp. Swapping your wheels may seem like a small change, but can make a big difference. From his tests, the rider discovers:

  • With conventional wheels, he can ride 20 minutes at an average speed of 41.12 kph with an average power of 379 watts.
  • With the Zipp 808 NSW aero wheels he rides 51 minutes at an average speed of 41.13 kph and average power of 344 watts.

Before looking at power and energy, I should go over two small details.

First, how do you measure power? Cyclists can measure power by installing a small computer, called a power meter, that measures the input torque at the pedals or crankshaft and records the rotation angle at timed intervals. If you know the torque and angle, you can calculate the input energy. Dividing this energy by time gives you power.

Second, this isn’t a perfect test of aerodynamics. If you really want to examine the effect of the new wheels, you probably would have to put a bike with a dummy in a wind tunnel. When the reviewer takes his second ride, many things could have changed—wind, body position, amount of sweat on the body—and impacted performance. Let’s assume the only thing that changed was the wheels.

Air Drag and Power

What happens when you ride a bike? If you are moving at a constant speed, then the net force on the bike-human system must be zero. In a slightly simplified view, I can draw the following force diagram:

The vertical forces (gravity pulling down and the ground pushing up) don’t really matter here. Just forget about them and pay attention to the horizontal forces. First, let’s look at the air drag. Air acts in complicated ways when an object passes through it. But who cares when we can make a simple model of air drag force? Here’s an expression for the magnitude of this force:

In this model, the air force is proportional to the square of the bike’s speed (v). For the other terms, we have:

  • ρ is the density of air (around 1.0 kg/m3).
  • A is the cross sectional area of the bike plus the rider (how much of the object interacts with the air).
  • Finally, C is the drag coefficient. This parameter depends upon the shape of the object. If you change the wheels, it is the value of C that should change.

The second horizontal force is the frictional force. An interaction between the road and the tires propels the bike. I know what you’re thinking: Doesn’t the human propel the bike? In a sense, yes. But the reality is sort of complicated. The rider’s power goes through the pedals and chain to the wheel, which turns. But the force comes from the tire pushing against the road. So for our energy perspective on this problem let’s just say the human provides the friction force.
