A young girl died Saturday after losing control of her bicycle and hitting a concrete wall in San Jose, police said.

The girl lost control while riding downhill on Valroy Drive in the La Colina neighborhood at about 3 p.m., according to the San Jose Police Department. She hit a raised curb on Curie Drive and was launched into a concrete retaining wall, causing a severe head injury.

The girl was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Authorities transported her to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office was investigating to confirm the girl’s identity and notify next of kin, police said.

Police said Saturday’s incident was the city’s 36th traffic fatality this year.

Anyone with information can contact Detective Bowen of the San Jose Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit at 408-277-4654.
