Medford family completes cross-country tandem bicycle trip

A Medford family is catching up on their rest after completing the final leg of a 3,300-mile cross-country trek on tandem bicycles that ended Thursday at Pleasure Beach in South Boston.

Fernando Barrios, 55, and his wife, Sarah O’Grady, 51, along with their daughters Anna, 17, and Isabel, 15, were met by a greeting party of friends cheering them on as they dismounted their bicycles and dipped the front tires into Pleasure Bay, marking the end of their journey that began June 1 in Astoria, Ore.

“It was definitely emotional,” Barrios said in an interview Thursday.

“I said to my family as we were rolling up to think about this entire trip and how far we’ve come,” he said. “But what was really amazing was the group of friends we had there at the beach. . . . Having that celebration there was fantastic.”

After spending more than two months on the road, on Wednesday the family rolled into Concord, where they stayed with friends for the night. They woke up to rain in the forecast for Thursday, and their friends offered to give them a ride to their Medford home.

But the bikers were determined to reach the end of their trek as they intended, rain or shine.

“We all felt like the original goal was to start in Astoria and end in Boston, and we needed to see that through,” Barrios said.

The trip officially ended at the beach, but they still needed to get home. The family got back on their bicycles and pedaled to Medford, navigating more traffic on the way than they did at any earlier point of their trip.

“It’s only 9.2 miles, but it was a pretty dicey 9.2 miles going through the Seaport and Downtown and parts of Charlestown and Assembly Row,” Barrios said. “All that is not for the faint of heart, in terms of cycling.”

Biden Gives Johnson an American-Made Bike During First Overseas Trip

President Joe Biden on Thursday gave British Prime Minister Boris Johnson a custom touring bicycle and a helmet during their first meeting in Cornwall, England.

The gift was offered as “a gesture of friendship and in recognition of their shared interest in cycling,” the White House said.

An avid cyclist, Johnson regularly rode his bike to work when he was the mayor of London. Earlier this year, he was criticized for going on a ride outside his neighborhood while the United Kingdom faced a surge in COVID-19 infections.

Biden also enjoys a leisurely bike ride and was seen taking one last week with first lady Jill Biden to celebrate her 70th birthday. The president is also a fan of indoor cycling — his exercise regimen during quarantine included working out on a Peloton.

Johnson’s new bicycle is painted blue with red and white details and bears the signatures of both leaders as well as US and UK flags. Bilenky Cycle Works, a family business in Philadelphia, built the bike and the matching helmet in less than two weeks, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Friday.

The owner, Stephen Bilenky, told the newspaper he’d gotten an email from the State Department about the bike order on May 23. “It was a crazy 10 days,” he said.

As part of the customary exchange of gifts between world leaders, Johnson gave Biden a framed photo of a mural of the abolitionist Frederick Douglass, Reuters reported.

Biden met with Johnson during his first overseas trip as president and ahead of the G7 summit from Friday to Sunday. The world leaders have gathered to discuss several topics, notably defeating the coronavirus pandemic.
