Modified Shelter-in-Place Order Allows Bicycle Shops, Some Social Services to Resume

FILE

Humboldt County’s Joint Information Center sent out a press release this afternoon clarifying how Gov. Gavin Newsom’s modified stay-at-home order changes things here in Humboldt. (Spoiler alert: not much.)

The modified order allows some real estate work to resume, bicycle shops to re-open and faith based social services to resume, all as “essential” activities. It also clarifies what types of outdoor recreation are allowable, while still practicing social distancing with everyone who is not a member of your household.

Check out the full press release below.

May 1, 2020 – Statewide Stay-at-Home Order Updated: Most Activities Already Allowed in Humboldt
707-441-5000 ; covidinfo@co.humboldt.ca.us ; Monday-Friday 8am to 7pm ; Saturday 10am to 5pm Opens in new window
California Governor Gavin Newsom further clarified the state’s Stay-at-Home Order in a series of posts and statements yesterday, though many of the activities mentioned are already allowed in Humboldt County.

Clarifications to essential services pertain to real estate, bicycle shops and faith-based social services. A summary is listed below.

Real estate: Residential and commercial real estate workers are limited to scheduled property viewings to a potential buying party. This does not extend to open-house viewings, nor viewings with more than one buying party at a time.
Bicycle sales and services: Clarified as an essential service.
Faith-based social services: Services for seniors, people experiencing homelessness, those with substance use disorders and those with behavioral health needs are clarified as essential services.
Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich said, “While we are still awaiting more clarification, the governor indicated that outdoor activities that are done solo or at most with two individuals other than household members, will be allowed under his order.”

Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said, “This is a step in the right direction as we prepare to move into the next phase of COVID-19 response. Humboldt County residents have been doing a great job of practicing responsible social distancing, and I encourage members of the community to keep it up while enjoying the outdoors.”

Social distancing measures include wearing facial coverings in shared indoor spaces other than the home, using facial coverings outdoors when within 6 feet of others, maintaining spacing of 6 feet or more from others at all times unless they are members of your household, frequently handwashing or using hand sanitizer and staying home when ill. “These measures will be more, not less important, as we begin to spend more time outside our homes during the coming weeks and months,” Dr. Frankovich said.

Below is the state’s non-exhaustive list of outdoor recreational activities that can be enjoyed while meeting social distancing requirements:

Athletics
Badminton (singles)
Throwing a baseball/softball
BMX biking
Canoeing (singles)
Crabbing
Cycling
Exploring Rock Pools
Gardening (not in groups)
Golf (singles, walking – no cart)*
Hiking (trails/ paths allowing distancing)
Horse Riding (singles)
Jogging and running
Kite Boarding and Kitesurfing
Meditation
Outdoor Photography
Picnics (with your stay-home household members only)

26 yrs old

Hi, my name is Kendra. I’m 26 years old. I am currently a nanny for a newborn four days a week so I am only available nights and weekends. I’m a fun-loving babysitter. I simply enjoy spending time with children. I pride myself on being able to play with the kids, yet still have them listen and respect me. I love taking children to interactive & fun activities such as the park, zoo, plays, etc. But I can also spend the day at home coloring, reading, and playing eye spy. It’s very easy for me to connect with kids. Keeping the child’s well-being is something I take very seriously. I’m a healthy balance of an easy going/patient attitude, and assertive when needed. I understand the importance of my role, and I’m willing to take on that responsibility. I’m also a great cook, a non smoker and love pets. My references are by request. Thank you!

Supporting Sustainable Practices

We proudly support UMD’s efforts toward creating a sustainable environment by providing programs motivated to reduce the amount of driving to campus. Like most institutions, we only offer a limited number of parking spaces, which then demands alternative modes to get to campus.

We collaborate with the Duluth Transportation Authority (DTA) to ensure the feasibility of taking the DTA bus around the city, which is an option many students, faculty, and staff utilize each semester.

UMD Parking & Transportation Study

A comprehensive parking and transportation study was conducted for the UMD campus by SRF Consulting Group, Inc. in 2015. The purpose of the study was to provide a complete review and analysis of the current and future campus parking and transportation supply and demand as well as the rate structure. Recommendations to meet current and future needs were based on data-driven analysis of benchmarks, best practices, and UMD campus information. The final report was presented to the campus in January 2016.

Looking for Affordable Senior Transportation?

GoGoGrandparent turns on demand transportation, like Lyft or Uber, into services that can be accessed and monitored without a smartphone.

If you or your loved one is no longer able to drive, there are personal transportation options through states programs, non-profits and private businesses. An example of a great option for senior transportation is Gogograndparent. They offer a convenient and affordable solution for seniors to get around. The safe transportation of seniors is very important, which is why Gogograndparent is one of our favorite services.

Did you know that one-half of Americans 65 and older do not have access to public transportation? And that more than half of all non-drivers 65 and older stay at home in a given day because they don’t have transportation options. Those in rural areas and small towns are particularly affected because the transportation options are limited.

But it’s important for seniors to remain mobile to keep their social independence with friends and family; to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, and many other life-prolonging benefits.

Is it Time to Stop Driving?

For some seniors the answer is obvious. They may be too visually impaired to continue driving.
Just consider these vision and driving facts:

  • Vision provides about 85% of information we need to make safe decisions when driving.
  • A 60-year-old requires 10 times as much light to drive as a 19-year-old.
  • A 55-year-old takes eight times longer to recover from glare than a 16-year-old.
  • Older drivers can take twice as long to distinguish the flash of brake lights as younger drivers.

A study of the problems seniors face with transportation was conducted by the Beverly Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Seniordrivers.org summarized their findings with the following themes:

  • Seniors continue driving “as long as possible because they are unaware of, or do not believe they have, alternative means of transportation.”
  • Seniors “limit their driving or stop driving altogether because of functional difficulties.”
  • “By the time they stop driving, many older adults are so disabled that they are unable to use most public and para-transit systems.”
  • “Next to health, transportation is the most important issue for seniors.”

Types of Personal Transportation

Volunteer Driver Programs are usually faith-based or nonprofits with a network of volunteers who offer transportation to for shopping, recreation, doctor’s appointments and other needs. Reservations are required. Cost is minimal and sometimes free.

Para-transit Service: Private agencies provide transportation using minibuses or small vans to the elderly or those with disabilities.

Door-through-Door Service: Private agencies provide drivers who offer personal assistance (wheelchair help, help with bags, etc.) through a passenger’s door and on through the door of their destination and back.
