DETROIT, Aug 20 (Reuters) – The investment surge by both new and established automakers in the electric vehicle market is a bonanza for factory equipment manufacturers that supply the highly automated picks and shovels for the prospectors in the EV gold rush.
The good times for the makers of robots and other factory equipment reflect the broader recovery in U.S. manufacturing. After falling post-COVID to $361.8 million in April 2020, new orders surged to almost $506 million in June, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
New electric vehicle factories, funded by investors who have snapped up newly public shares in companies such as EV start-up Lucid Group Inc (LCID.O) are boosting demand. “I’m not sure it’s reached its climax yet. There’s still more to go,” Andrew Lloyd, electromobility segment leader at Stellantis-owned (STLA.MI) supplier Comau, said in an interview. “Over the next 18 to 24 months, there’s going to be a significant demand coming our way.”
Growth in the EV sector, propelled by the success of Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), comes on top of the normal work manufacturing equipment makers do to support production of gasoline-powered vehicles.
Automakers will invest over $37 billion in North American plants from 2019 to 2025, with 15 of 17 new plants in the United States, according to LMC Automotive. Over 77% of that spending will be directed at SUV or EV projects.
Equipment providers are in no rush to add to their nearly full capacity.
“There’s a natural point where we will say ‘No'” to new business, said Comau’s Lloyd. For just one area of a factory, like a paint shop or a body shop, an automaker can easily spend $200 million to $300 million, industry officials said.
‘WILD, WILD WEST’ “This industry is the Wild, Wild West right now,” John Kacsur, vice president of the automotive and tire segment for Rockwell Automation(ROK.N), told Reuters. “There is a mad race to get these new EV variants to market.” Automakers have signed agreements for suppliers to build equipment for 37 EVs between this year and 2023 in North America, according to industry consultant Laurie Harbour. That excludes all the work being done for gasoline-powered vehicles.
“There’s still a pipeline with projects from new EV manufacturers,” said Mathias Christen, a spokesman for Durr AG (DUEG.DE), which specializes in paint shop equipment and saw its EV business surge about 65% last year. “This is why we don’t see the peak yet.”
Orders received by Kuka AG, a manufacturing automation company owned by China’s Midea Group (000333.SZ), rose 52% in the first half of 2021 to just under 1.9 billion euros ($2.23 billion) – the second-highest level for a 6-month period in the company’s history, due to strong demand in North America and Asia.
“We ran out of capacity for any additional work about a year and a half ago,” said Mike LaRose, CEO of Kuka’s (KU2G.DE) auto group in the Americas. “Everyone’s so busy, there’s no floor
Congratulations on buying a new car! You’ve waited your whole life for this, and it’s everything you’d hoped for. You’ve got the latest technology, the hottest styling, and more muscle than the tires can handle. There’s only one problem: Your vehicle’s warranty has expired.
It seems unbelievable, I know. You just bought that car last week. How could the warranty be expired? Well, warranties aren’t what they used to be. You know how back in the day, you’d buy a refrigerator, and it would last for 20 years, but now you’re lucky if you get 18 months out of the thing before the ice maker jams and the crisper drawer somehow starts actually cooking your food? Warranties are like that too. These new ones, they’re not like Lee Iacocca’s 7/70 plans. You get them home, they’re in effect for a while, but then they expire all willy-nilly. That’s why I’ve been calling you. And calling you. Glad you finally picked up, after I spoofed your doctor’s phone number. Don’t worry—you’re fine. But your warranty isn’t.
Fortunately, I’ve got a warranty that actually works. My entry-level plan is bumper to bumper, by which I mean it covers all the way from the left side to the right side of either your front or rear bumper. The choice is yours! I’ll be honest, though. That plan—all it covers is the actual bumper. And there’s a $1000 deductible. So I’d never suggest that one. I only bring it up since you need a warranty, on account of yours being expired. It’s the only one I have that’s even nearly as bad as yours.
What I would suggest, at a minimum, is our five-year, 60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty. You might say, “Hey, that sounds exactly like the one my car already has!” But I assure you, there are major differences. Say you were driving down the road when Brood X, the 17-year apocalyptic plague of cicadas, descended on your car and a bunch of them got sucked past your air filter, which caused your radiator to explode. Happens all the time. Does your factory warranty cover that exact situation? Ours does. In fact, it covers only that situation. And sure, those cicadas are gone for now, but they’ll be back in 2038. And what’s your plan for that?
Even better than the 5/60 warranty is our 10-year, 10,000-mile warranty. You say that doesn’t make sense, but I’ll have you know the 10/10 is our bestseller. Who among us hasn’t lost their keys for two to six years, only to find them and realize that their warranty had expired? This warranty is great for key losers, collector-car owners, and pedestrians. And it covers everything, with very few exceptions.
For instance, headlights used to be inexpensive and easy to replace. Not anymore. With your new car’s LED headlights, swapping in a replacement lamp may require removing half the
COIMBRA, Portugal (BRAIN) — SRAM officially opened a new TIME pedal factory here on Friday, with an inauguration celebration presided over by the mayor. The city said the factory will produce 200,000 pairs of pedals per year and create 25 new jobs by next November.
According to a release from the city, the new facility has an area of 6,500 square feet that can be quickly expanded to 12,000 square feet. Currently the factory has created six new jobs but plans call for adding another 18-20 workers by next November. The factory also will eventually make hubs and wheels, the city said.
“The acquisition of TIME will allow SRAM to continue and diversify its product line, this time in the production of pedals, contributing to the development of the cycling industry in Portugal,” said Isabel Gomes, the director of SRAM in Portugal.
Gil Nadais, the Secretary-General of Portugal’s National Association of Two-Wheel Industries, Hardware, Furniture and Related Products, ABIMOTA, said, “Over the last few years, the Portuguese two-wheel and smooth mobility sector, with a strong contribution from our Portugal Bike Value project, has struggled to provide the country and Europe with ever greater production capacity, reducing dependence on foreign markets and developing shorter distribution chains. With this unit, we take an important step towards achieving these goals.”
SRAM bought the TIME shoe and pedal business from the Rossignol Group in February. Rossignol sold the TIME frame and bike business to Cardinal Cycling Group.
