JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) — The Johnson City Police Department said one person has been arrested after trying to steal a vehicle from the Wegmans’ parking lot and stealing and fleeing with a vehicle from the Oakdale Mall parking lot.
According to a news release, Johnson City Police charged 26-year-old Brandon Hamilton with two counts of robbery in the first degree, a class B felony.
Police said officers responded to Wegmans on Sept. 5 for a report of a man that tried to steal an occupied vehicle and assault a victim there. They said while officers were responding to the incident at Wegmans, they were advised that a man had assaulted a female and stole her vehicle from the Oakdale Mall parking lot.
Officers discovered that the suspect at Wegmans threatened the victim and demanded that he get out of his vehicle. They said after he failed to steal the vehicle, he attempted to assault the victim before he fled on foot.
At the Oakdale Mall parking lot, police said the suspect forcibly removed a woman from her vehicle, pepper-sprayed her, and then fled the scene in her vehicle.
The Vestal Police Department received a suspicious person report and officers with Vestal Police arrived at a location on Underwood Road and found the vehicle that was stolen from the Oakdale Mall parking lot.
Authorities noted that Vestal Police found the suspect and detained him in relation to the incidents at Wegmans and Oakdale Mall parking lots.
Johnson City Police said it was determined that the suspect was responsible for the incidents.
Hamilton was processed and taken to the Broome County Correction Facility for arraignment and remanded to the county jail.
