BERA: Issue 2 Automotive Industry: Global Automotive Industry

Increasing global trade has enabled the growth in world commercial distribution systems, which has also expanded global competition amongst the automobile manufacturers. Japanese automakers in particular, have instituted innovative production methods by modifying the U.S. manufacturing model, as well as adapting and utilizing technology to enhance production and increase product competition.

There are a number of trends that can be identified by examining the global automotive market, which can be divided into the following factors:4

Global Market Dynamics – The world’s largest automobile manufacturers continue to invest into production facilities in emerging markets in order to reduce production costs. These emerging markets include Latin America, China, Malaysia and other markets in Southeast Asia.

U.S. automakers, “The Big Three” (GM, Ford and Chrysler) have merged with, and in some cases established commercial strategic partnerships with other European and Japanese automobile manufacturers. Overall, there has been a trend by the world automakers to expand in overseas markets.

Industry Consolidation – Increasing global competition amongst the global manufacturers and positioning within foreign markets has divided the world’s automakers into three tiers, the first tier being GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda and Volkswagen, and the two remaining tier manufacturers attempting to consolidate or merge with other lower tier automakers to compete with the first tier companies.

1st Tier Company Mergers – Volkswagen-Lamborgini; BMW-Rolls Royce
2nd Tier Company Mergers – Chrysler-Mercedes Benz; Renault-Nissan-Fiat
3rd Tier Company Mergers – Mazda-Mitsubishi; Kia-Volvo

This section presents literature that examines three major automotive markets in North America, Europe and East Asia. This material is intended to provide a thorough examination of industry trends, structure, and the effects of global market dynamics of the automotive industry within each region, as well as their interrelationships, followed by literature researching the East Asian automotive market.

The Coronavirus Pandemic Is Forcing Cities To Rethink Public Transportation

As parts of Europe and the United States begin to lift coronavirus lockdown restrictions and allow people to go shopping, visit relatives and return to work, public officials are facing a new conundrum: How can people travel safely in crowded cities?

Italy is poised to serve as a major test case. On Sunday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced that many restrictions on daily life will be eased starting next Monday, but he warned that people would still need to avoid large gatherings, maintain social distancing and wear masks in certain circumstances.

“If we do not respect the precautions, the curve will go up, the deaths will increase and we will have irreversible damage to our economy,” Conte said in a televised address to the nation. “If you love Italy, keep your distance.”

People walk to the San Giovanni metro station in Rome on April 24 during a three-hour testing period of new measures designed to reduce congestion on public transportation, April 24.

Some 2.7 million Italians are expected to return to work next week, with 15% of them anticipated to use public transportation, according to Italian authorities.

Thus, government officials and business leaders are scrambling to develop protocols to allow people to move about freely without triggering a surge in coronavirus infections.

Under new guidelines that are being considered, the number of people allowed on buses and trains is likely to be restricted. Markers will be placed on the ground in metro stations to enforce social distancing, and camera systems and personnel will be deployed to help count passengers and prevent overcrowding, according to HuffPost Italy.

Italy’s transport ministry has suggested that electronic ticket machines will likely become standard, with hand sanitizer dispensers installed nearby. Trains and buses will be disinfected regularly, and the way passengers board and exit vehicles and stations will be adjusted. Moreover, a key goal of any plan will be to spread out daily commuters in order to reduce congestion.

Already, new measures are being tested in Rome. During a three-hour testing period on Friday, only 30 passengers were allowed into stations every three minutes at two of the city’s metro lines, and the number of passengers on each train was capped at 150, HuffPost Italy reported. On the train platforms, blue stripes with small dots indicated how far apart passengers needed to stand. Passages connecting the two lines were closed to prevent people from crossing each other and creating crowds.

In addition, many cities are hoping to encourage people to use alternate forms of transportation. Bologna has requested support from the federal government for the purchase of e-bikes and electric scooters, for example, and Milan has unveiled an ambitious plan to remake

KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — Police busted a drug distribution syndicate following the arrests of five individuals in several locations throughout the city centre last week, including seizing narcotics worth almost RM885,000.

City police chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the first arrest took place near a condominium along Jalan Ipoh around 9.40am on April 22.

“A team from the Sentul district’s Narcotics Crime Investigation Department first detained a 19-year-old youth before a search on his vehicle found 3kg of ecstasy pills worth RM240,000. The police subsequently seized the suspect’s vehicle worth RM40,000.

“Initial investigations revealed that the suspect was actively involved in drug distribution activities around Klang Valley since October 2019,” he said in a statement here.

According to Mazlan, transactions for the drug supplies were made through online banking and instant messaging application, WeChat.

Based on the information obtained from the first suspect, a police raid was conducted at a home in Batu Caves, Selangor around 10.20am on April 22.

At the premises, police discovered a cache of drugs kept in the living room worth around RM645,526.

Among the drugs seized were 2.6kg of ketamine, 221 ecstasy pills, 45.66g of syabu, 1.12g of ketamine and 2116 Eramin 5 pills. Also seized were RM11,344 in cash.

Mazlan said a third police raid was subsequently conducted at a home in Taman Selayang Baru, Selangor at 6.30pm the same day, leading to the arrest of three men and a woman aged between 26 and 31.

During the raid, police also seized RM26,261 in cash and two vehicles — a Mercedes E200 worth RM70,000 and a Honda HRV worth RM65,000.

“Based on investigations, one of the suspects admitted to their involvement in drug distribution and had obtained supplies from another unidentified man.

“The police are now intensifying their efforts to track down the remaining individuals suspected of being involved in such activities,” he added.

All suspects have been remanded until April 29 and the police are investigating the case under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking which carries a death sentence upon conviction.
